I have more than once considered taking a page from the book of one the Catholic Church's more reactionary leaders--not the current Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI, but rather one of his ideological predecessors, Pope Pius IX. This pope, in 1864, released a document known as the Syllabus of Errors, a list of ideas in modern thought that he considered to be fallacious and in contradiction to the Truth, as defined by the Pope and his theological entourage.
While I think that Pius 9's opinions are a bunch of nonsense and have been invalidated by the progress of reason through history, I have always rather admired the blunt way that he issued as a Papal Encyclical a summary of what he thought was wrong with how everyone was thinking about stuff and simply declaring it all to be dumb and wrong and saying, "OK enough now. Stop it. God has spoken (through me)."
In this spirit, I propose the compilation of a new Syllabus of Errors in Contemporary Thought. Unlike the Papal document, however, this one won't be masquerading as the Word of God and will be open to debate and alternative and interpretation.
The first error that I would like to register into the Syllabus is this: "Public officials, members of general publics, and many religious institutions and political parties seem to be believe that it is somehow their fucking business to say that gay people should not be allowed to get married, and that such an attitude can legitimately and justly be ratified by a simple popular vote. We find this to be an error in contemporary thought and declare it to be invalid."
Readers are welcomed to enter other suggestions for errors or comment on this one in this post's comments. Gradually I will compile a fresh new Syllabus Errorum and release it on the world. Mwaahahahahaha!
