Interesting. I tend to pace myself by chapters when I write a novel. 100,000 words tends to be my internal meter--it's pretty easy to hit that on the first draft. The first novel I wrote (after many years of not writing) was right at 100,000 words, and I ended up adding, then subtracting until it came out at around 97k. Since then I seem to be getting the pace and flow of the words right.
Not doing NaNo this year; need to research the next novel (I am nattering around with a free flow story that has hit around 20k; I seem to have three of these lying around). Meanwhile, the short stories seem to be simmering. But it took NaNo to get the writer's block flushed out and the internal editor jailed long enough for me to figure out how to get something written without getting reactive and assuming it was crap.
